Review of Red Shoe Diaries (1992) by Larry Y — 15 Aug 2011
Duchovny's acting range is limited but he is good at playing scuzzbags pretty well (hence why he is good in Californication on Showtime. He really is a scuzzbag). Zalman King's films and short stories are incredibly steamy.
..for 1992. Today they seem kind of pretentious and contrived. His masterpiece, 9 1/2 Weeks, still serves as a benchmark for pure cinematic eroticism. His Red Shoe Diaries were similar in nature but offered us more a chance to see present day celebrities in more compromising roles, which is a good thing (There's a Red Shoe Diary episode where Matt LeBlanc does a full frontal scene.
Yikes). This screen adaptation was merely a jumped up Red Shoe episode. Entertaining and erotic yet predictable. A good thing to watch with your girlfriend or wife right before the nipple makes its first appearance :-).
