Review of Red Road (2006) by Ryan Y — 15 Jun 2007
First, this is not a thriller. It's a drama at best. It's tediously slow-paced. The conclusion is unbelievebly anti-climactic. Otherwise, it's beautifully filmed. It was a good concept, showing helplessness and desperation, but I never really bought into what was going on.
Everything that seems like it would be important later on doesn't turn out to be. It's a movie about life. A life touched by tragedy, yes, but beyond that it could be anyone's hum-drum life.
This can be a beautiful device, but not when it's stretched out as long as this was, or when it's marketed as a thriller. Perhaps I just had the wrong expectations and this simply wasn't what I was looking for tonight.
After all, it did play on voyuerism, grief, and justice in a very clever way that I can definitely appreciate. But, when it comes down to it, I was a bit bored.
