Review of Red Road (2006) by Ola G — 14 Nov 2010
Jackie (Kate Dickie) works as a CCTV operator in Glasgow. Each day she watches over a small part of the city, protecting the people living their lives under her gaze. One day a man, Clyde (Tony Curran), appears on her monitor, a man she thought she would never see again, a man she never wanted to see again. She begins to plan how to confront him and then she makes her move...
After I saw the great "Fish Tank" last year, I heard about Andrea Arnolds "Red Road", but it´s not until now I got the opportunity to see it. This is another in depth look at the grey, gritty and depressing industrial city life. And as well a comment on the modern surveillance society we are building up these days. Arnold´s ways of directing is minimalistic and simple and yet she delivers a touching story with excellent acting performances. I like how Arnold builds up the story and reveals the plot very late in the movie. If you liked "Fish Tank" you will like "Red Road". I am looking forward to Andrea Arnold´s upcoming projects.
