A great achievement for the western genre and film in general. What makes it entertaining are the many cultural undertones that are hidden throughout. It is not the representativeness of the western but of the time in which the film was made that speaks loudest.

The acting is superb from the two leads, mostly John Wayne in the role of Tom Dunson. Clift Montgomery thrives in the way he interacts with Wayne's character, but that alone. Hawks' direction intricately places and observes the complex relationship in the world it takes place, but speaks of a different time with different issues.

Essentially, this film is a joy to watch and a great exercise for the active viewer.
