Review of Red River (2009) by Paul C — 24 Oct 2008
F***ing Epic. Howard Hawks was a mo fo'n genius. Incredibly dated, but incredibly awesome. It's pretty much Mutiny on the Bounty transplanted from the ocean to the vast emptiness of the frontier.
Certainly darker than Hawks tends to get when he partners with Wayne, but they both perform brilliantly--there is one scene during the climax when John Wayne is downright terrifying. Also one of Montgomery Clift's first screen roles, and his brilliance is already apparent.
