Review of Red Riding Hood (2011) by John Joseph M — 29 Jan 2012
I think it was the great Roger Corman who said the beginning and the end of a film has to be brilliant then the audience will forgive whatever is in between (or something along those lines). Well Catherine Hardwicke has made a film with a shockingly bad beginning and ending, it is only the middle that is bearable and that's all down to the magnetic Gary Oldman who numbs the pain that the entire cast is trying to inflict on us.
Amanda Seyfried is forgettable, her two male co stars are dire and Virginia Madsen (who I have always been fond of) looks like she's wandered off a biopic of an Italian prostitute who overdosed on surgery and foundation.
You thought David Lynch made films that left you with questions, wait till you see this. I left the cinema wondering how they looked so warm in a constant blizzard which was so cold that no one's breath was visible, breath passing by immaculate white teeth and perfect complexions, damn they had it good in the ye olden days.
Also, how badass is a Wolf that can kill by just scagging it's victim, a paper cut would be more fatal. Most importantly of all, why oh why does Julie Christie turn into Mr. Ed?
