I understand that suspension of belief is required when watching movies but this movie has a thin plot and is all about the science, so in this case I can't overlook how wrong they got it. First, it would take thousands of years, not decades, to teraform a planet so that it had breathable air.

Solar storms don't just appear out of nowhere. Even with today's technology, there would be ample warning before one could reach Mars. They have robots with artificial intelligence yet send humans on a dangerous missions all the way to Mars? They don't have a telescope powerful enough to see that their HAB has been destroyed? A weak plot with made-up science.
