Review of Red Planet (2000) by Bryan W — 04 Feb 2009
Though there's something to be said for a more technical and realistic approach to the material at hand, this film seems to revel too much in its own philosophical musings and cardboard characters for its own good.
The only actor turning in a decent performance is Terrence Stamp, who unfortunately isn't around long enough to make much of an impact (though the inclusion of such an old man on a trip like this is highly questionable).
Littered with bizarre scenes, like one astronaut virtually pushing another to his death, it's hard for the movie to cohese into anything resonant, and it completely lacks any sense of wonder, sapping one of the core tenets of space travel.
Though I do love the explanation of being able to breathe on Mars and some of the embittered interactions of the astronauts, I find this jumble too technically illiterate to enjoy as anything more than a rest stop while channel surfing.
