Review of Red Noses (1932) by Byron B — 04 Feb 2014
Let's hear it for the ladies! This comic misadventure is included on the video tape with Laurel & Hardy's Way Out West. I'm not sure how many times Zasu Pitts and Thelma Todd co-starred together.
They play thinly veiled versions of themselves, even using their real names. Thelma is the attractive blonde, while Zasu is the lanky, awkward brunette. They are roommates and co-workers. Their boss orders them to go to a Turkish bath when they miss work because they feel under the weather.
Even though it is a women's bath, Zasu feels uncomfortable about the skimpy white gym outfit she is expected to wear. The ladies get massages, which are either too relaxing or too painful. The slapstick of the exercises are mainly humorous because of the dated machinery, such as a vibrating chair and something like a mechanical bull that is shaped more like an ostrich.
