Review of Red Lights (2012) by Jordi T — 12 Sep 2012
The truth is, I had high hopes for this movie - a tale where the science of psychology clashes with its counterpart, parapsychology, directed by the modern, ambitious and incredibly talented filmmaker Rodrigo Cortà (C)s - and it could have been such a great battle. Honestly, Red Lights is (so far I'd say) this year biggest missed opportunity. A lot of talent comes up empty in Red Lights, a thriller that doesn't thrill and a film pretending to be intelligent, whereas it falls apart.
It has a few good moments tho, especially when you can witness the hysteria parapsychologists can create, and the few moments where the scientists truly battle with the mentalists. The setup is not developped enough, it is silly, but it entertains - disappointing towards the ending tho, a plot-twist that leaves a small "aha-effect" but doesn't satisfy at all.
Disappointing, yes, but I still believe in Cortà (C)s.... I know he can do better. The cast is great by the way but lots of talent goes to waste here, unfortunately. Especially when it comes to Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy, they act so great together!
All in all, not a catastrophe, but far from what it could have been. Really, really far.
