Review of Red Hill (2010) by Garrett R — 16 Mar 2011
RED HILL is an excellent Western/horror hybrid that's as story-driven as it is impending dread-filled. Thrown in quality character acting, brutal violence, plus an unpredictable story and you got yourself a winner.
Shane Cooper transferred to Red Hill from the city, due to family complications. On his first day as a part of the Red Hill Police Department, Jimmy Conway escapes from a maximum security prison. He was convicted of murder of one Red Hill police deputy, and it seems he has to finish off the rest of the crew...
Ryan Kwanten (TRUE BLOOD) as Constable Shane Cooper is driven in delivering his character's heroic qualities as well as keeping Jimmy Conway and his wrathful fury back. Steve Bisley as Old Bill plays a deep role, one that requires the right amount of presence, wisdom, and focus. Bisley gets the job done very well. Tommy Lewis plays Conway as a silent hunter, armed with a lone shotgun, bringin' his own brand of deliverance with him. One couldn't help but be reminded of Javier Bardem's Anton Chigurh from NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, for only their single-minded goals and ruthless effiency.
RED HILL is the debut of producer, writer and director Patrick Hughes. His up-close filmmaking style and fast cuts fully immerse the viewer into the extreme proceedings taking place in and around Red Hill. By the way, Red Hill is a great name for a western or a horror film, in this case both!
For fans of horror, Westerns, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THE BURROWERS (an American horror Western) and Ryan Kwanten, do see the story-driven and dread-filled RED HILL.
