Review of Red Hill (2010) by Jarett B — 06 Dec 2010
I have to admit: those Aussie's make a fine western (ala The Proposition). Before you get too excited, let me tell you that there is really nothing in Red Hill that you have not seen before. However, what is in Red Hell is done very well.
There is a tad of melodrama and the ending conforms to standards more so than the opening hour and fifteen minutes of the film, but (at least) I can overcome these qualms and enjoy the shit out of a great modern western.
Hughes is clearly a fan of Sergio Leone, as the film feels (in style and mysticism) and sounds (Morricone-esque) like A Fistful of Dollars. Further, as a western should, the landscape cinematography is amazing! I've not seen the interior lands of Australia beautified quite like this in a while (Walkabout comes to mind.
..). This film is a sleeper and I feel it should get more recognition, especially in a year when The Social Network is the standard to beat... Boo.
