Review of Red Hill (2010) by Aidan H — 20 Jan 2011
This rugged and entertaining Aussie thriller has a Western feel to it with enough stand-offs, gun play and Morricone-esque guitar twanging to choke Sergio Leone. It's always interesting to see an actor portray injury realistically and BP's star, Ryan Kwanten, spends most of his on-screen time authentically depicting a man in pain (which makes his efforts to catch the escaped convict all the more excruciating to watch).
The supporting cast are pretty good too, providing some of the film's lighter moments as well as providing the elemental killer with plenty of unwilling targets. It's only weakness is its attempts to cross horror, action, comedy and supernatural genres which, while subtle, don't always add to the mix.
Inventive and suspenseful, it's definitely one worth watching. Extra star for some great outback cinematography.
