Review of Red Hill (2010) by Markellus R — 20 Jan 2011
While its entertaining, too much of the film relies on the gullibility of its audience. For instance, apparently no one knows how to use a gun except for the "bad guy." The twist is well executed, but hides its most brutal element in the sub plot.
Red Hill is about a young officer who moves to a small town in the Outback to get away from the hustle and bustle of the bug city, so his pregnant wife can have a quiet, peaceful pregnancy, as they lost their first child six months into term.
Conveniently, a prisoner escapes on his first day. A prisoner seeking vengeance on his town of hostiles. The kid is thrown into the mix in varying scenes of off putting gun fights with locals who couldn't shoot their way out of a paper sack.
What does work here is the subtlety and overwhelming suspense that oozes at the seems from the very beginning. It keeps you interested, and is beautifully shot, but poor acting from the kid in the main role, and the absolutely awful gun battles keep this from being great.
