Review of Red Hill (2010) by Lee W — 09 Aug 2011
While Red Hill may be set in contemporary Australia, we're firmly in classic western territory.
Ruthless escaped convict, returned to his home town to wreak bloody vengeance? Yup. The grizzled cop and town figurehead that put him away? Yup. Gunshy, conflicted young hero (Ryan Kwanten, aka True Blood's Jason Stackhouse) just arrived from the big smoke? Yup, yup and yup.
You'll have worked out what's going on long before Kwanten's character is clued in but the telegraphed ending doesn't diminish a stylish, lean and effective action-thriller.
