Review of Red Dragon (1965) by Eric V — 15 Jul 2011
Brett Ratner's only true film, where we finally see a story that is compelling and entertaining - probably because it's already an established mythology so all he had to do was mimic what made it work.
And that's what this film is really, a copy of what made Silence of the Lambs good, but nevertheless makes is Ratner's best film. He concentrated on telling a complete story and managed to pay homage to Jonathan Demme's style and approach without ruining it.
With actors like Hopkins, Fiennes, Hoffman, Keitel, and the great Edward Norton, Ratner couldn't afford to fuck it up. He stayed focused and in control and delivered a thriller that satisfies and takes us back to a dark place be it the world of Dr.
Hannibal Lecter. Not as good as Silence or Manhunter, but a lot better than Hannibal and better than a lot of things that came out in 2002.
