Review of Red Dragon (1965) by Tim S — 10 Oct 2014
In the overall scheme of things, Red Dragon is probably the most accessible entry in the Hannibal Lecter saga outside of The Silence of the Lambs. While I much more prefer the original Manhunter, Hannibal can be a tough watch despite being beautifully stylish, and Hannibal Rising is barely worth mentioning.
Red Dragon is a curiosity though. It's an attempt to tie itself to The Silence of the Lambs much more than the other films, and it's perhaps Brett Ratner's best film, which is saying one hell of a lot.
The performances are very good, but there are a lot of elements in there that don't really belong, such as some of Lecter's backstory and the tacked on bit at the end with Will Graham and his family at their home (not to mention the horrible tacked on ending).
Still, there's some decent stuff and a little bit of style to it. It's not the best version of this story, in my opinion, but it's not a complete pile of garbage either.
