Review of Red Cliff (2008) by Sinn O — 05 Dec 2009
Imagine taking the first 20 minutes of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, stretching it out over 2.5 hours, only it's Chinese warriors in medieval armor doing sick martial arts and you have REDCLIFF. Woo even manages to slip in his trademark "Mexican standoff" in the end, which is a delight to fans.
This is a great adaptation, totally in keeping with the spirit of the Chinese classics, and as much as I'd like to see the full Chinese version, I can't fault the director because he delivered Western audiences a perfect film.
Females? I think you're really going to like the princess in this movie (way better than in LORD OF THE RINGS.) She's tough, plucky and plays a key role in the victory. See this on the big screen.
John Woo is probably the greatest living action director and I'm so glad he taken this route for the latest addition to his canon.
