Review of Red Cliff (2008) by Chie_Kit M — 19 Dec 2009
War movie done right. The minus points were mostly due to the amateurish acting of Lin Chiling and her character's unnecessary scenes. She was obviously cast for her looks to represent Xiaoqiao who was considered to be one of the great beauties of their times but that choice marred an otherwise great movie experience.
She was so awkward and had a grand total of one expression learnt from her modelling days: the come hither. While it must have been part of Xiaoqiao's appeal, I am pretty sure that role required more than one expression. It could have been portrayed with a lot more depth and there are plenty of beautiful actors who could have done a much better job.
And what is with those erotic interplay between the husband and wife? Sexual exploration can be a powerful plot device if it has its place in the storyline. I honestly can't see how those scenes can bring anything to the story. For Caocao's scenes they were necessary to illustrate a certain desire to own Xiaoqiao but the couple's rompings just seem like an excuse for some gratuitous sex scenes.
