Review of Red Cliff (2008) by Se7Enth A — 08 Jan 2010
Casts: Tony Leung (Zhou Yu); Takeshi Kaneshiro (Zhuge Liang); Zhang Fengyi (Cao Cao); Chang Chen (Sun Quan) Wei Zhao (Sun Shang xiang).
A sprawling war epic indeed which is based on an AD 208 Chinese battle. After the fall of the majestic Han dynasty, China was split into three large kingdoms. Red Cliff was released in two parts, totalling almost five hours. Red Cliff tells the story of the pivotal Battle of Red Cliff. Directed by King of action genre, John Woo. After making his mark in Hollywood, he returns to his Asian cinema roots. Watch it for the magnificient locations and lush costumes, the colossal scenes of armies in battles. The fight sequences were pure spectacle. My Favourite Asian actor, Tony Leung brought about a fine balance of brains and brawn to the Zhou Yu character. Apparently the role was suppose to be portrayed by another well known veteran actor, Chow Yun Fatt. How I felt that after watching Tony Leung's luminous portrayal, I doubt Chow could bring that particular character to life. Takeshi Kaneshiro was also brilliant in his role. Don t miss this one,John Woo's Red Cliff is the real deal. An extraordinary film.
