Review of Red Cliff (2008) by Tony F — 25 Mar 2010
Red Cliff is a epic film that can be filed on the DVD shelves next to Moses, Ben Hur, Braveheart, etc and more than hold it's own.
John Woo went all out on this one and this appears to me to be a signature film cementing his legacy as the best Asian film maker ever, at the very least of accolades.
Red Cliff must be seen in the Asian version in it's 4 hour and 20 minutes of glory. Yes, Blu Ray I and II are needed for this one so unplug the phone and make some favorite beverages.
Based on fact to a degree, in appx 200 A.D. nearing the end of the Han dynasty an epic war was waged on the Red Cliffs near the south banks of the Yangtze.
This is a period piece in general but, has all the trappings of a Zen study, an Art of War strategm conflict, underdog vs over confident tyrant and everything in between.
The cinematography is rich and reminds me of a time when American movies were also made with huge shots of terrain and natural beauty. The fight scenes are fresh and the battle scenes are very good and give the war movie buff new material to ponder.
Brilliant movie and every small scene holds value in character study.
Bravisimo.
