Review of Red Cliff (2008) by Kirsti B — 30 Apr 2010
There's one apt way to describe the cinematic experience that is Red Cliff - EPIC. And it's Epic in every sense of the word. Lush beautiful landscapes, impressive performances, brilliant music score, fantastic choreography and effects make this a beautiful visual treat. Based on the true story of the Battle of the Red Cliffs between three kingdoms, the movie takes us back to 200AD in China. At around 4 hours long, the movie can get tiring at times, but thankfully, the original was released in two parts. Which does help indeed. The battle scenes are a treat to watch, while the rest of the scenes with the planning of the battles, the strategies, interactions between the lead characters and the soldiers is brilliantly executed as well. In the 4 hours, the lead characters' roles are well developed, and it's hard not to cheer with them through their struggles and victories.
Definitely worth a watch, for the complete cinematic experience!
P.S: Watch the original 2- part Chinese release version. The rereleased and highly edited version misses out on a lot.
