Review of Red Beard (1965) by Dustin G — 17 Jun 2007
A fantastic study of not just poverty and sanity but humanity altogether. Several very moving stories interweave around the seemingly immovable Red Beard, a doctor played by the great Toshiro Mifune in perhaps his finest performance. Cruelty and compassion, lonliness and bonding, despair and hope can all be found in this uplifting drama, with a touch of the Kurosawaesque humour that none of his films would be quite complete without. It's rare that I watch a film that is so good that words cannot do it justice, and this is one of them. Watch it with care, because it's powerful enough to make you want to be a better person.
All that, and one of the greatest action scenes of all time.
