Review of Red Beard (1965) by Matthew M — 26 Aug 2007
I know most people familiar with Kurosawa's work would say this wasn't his best, and in the strictest sense that is true. But of all his films, this one struck me the most. Kurosawa takes the raw humanity he loves so much to depict, and does it in a very elegant, seamless way.
SOme might say it's emotionally heavy-handed. Some may even go the other way and call it emotionally stunted. I think it's emotionally savvy.
