Review of Red Beard (1965) by Robert W — 23 Mar 2008
This movie is worth the investment of 3 hours; however veiwers should be forewarn that the story line is a little slow at the beginning. Once you get pass this, you will be rewarded with a uplifting story on the power of compassion in the human experience.
Those expecting a Kurosawa samurai film will be disappointed because there is only one action scene. The power of this movie comes from watching the spiritual development of the young doctor under the mentoring of Red Beard.
As expected, there are plenty of great camera shots. My favorite is the shot at the water well. Again Kurosawa shows that he is a master in the use of lights and shadows like how he frames Otoyo eyes or the death scene of Rokusuke.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys cinema as an artform. More than entertainment, it is an experience.
