Akahige aka Red Beard tells a story of a young ambitious doctor who is assigned to a small Japanese clinic against his will. The young intern's plan was to be the shogun's personal doctor and the poor peoples clinic is far from that. The movie gains its name from the main doctor who is called the Red Beard, he is an impressive and admantium character who Mifune portrays perfectly. Soon a special bond is born between the two doctors and they try their best to help people in distress.

Red Beard is a wonderful story of personal growth and it tells the story of the people involved in a very human way. The movie is an epic in running time and takes little over 3 hours from start to beginning due to the many side stories in the movie. For some the movie must feel too slow paced and perhaps boring but they are missing something special here. Red Bear is a remomerable movie of empathy that left a mark on me, I recommend it to anybody who is intrested in deep story driven movies.
