Review of Red Beard (1965) by Gavin T — 11 Jun 2009
Kurosawa's final collaboration with Mifune. Also Kurosawa's last black and white film.
There's some masterful sets and lighting in some scenes, but that's not this film's real strength.
The characterisation of the Yasumoto character is great, and you take great interest in how he develops as a doctor. Mifune doesnt feature as much in this film, and it's not one of his best to be honest.
The film is quite long, probably too long. It's worth a watch, but there are better Kurosawa films out there.
