Review of Red Beard (1965) by Paul J — 15 Jun 2009
Akahige aka Red Beard (1965).
This is another great Akira Kurosawa directed movie, although a little on the long side. I have only recently had the pleasure of seeing this and it has become one of my favorite Kurosawa films. The story takes place in the 19th century, feudal Japan days. Dr. Kyojio Niide (Toshirô Mifune) who is nicknamed Red Beard because of his red tinted beard and his name is hard to pronounce, runs a charity hospital.
Dr. Noboru Yasumoto (Yuzo Kayama) is a young visiting student doctor more or less assigned as an intern. At first he's very disappointed that he's stuck working there in this impoverished hospital, when he had high hopes of being a member of the court medical staff, but he slowly feels for the many patients and starts to help where ever he can. There are many little melodramatic stories of these various people told throughout the movie. Far too many to describe here, except that each short story works on it's own.
I highly recommend that you watch this movie if you get the opportunity.
