Review of Red Beard (1965) by Michael O — 28 Jun 2009
Found this one to be a captivating film. Teaches us to have a little 'faith' in people and to not be so guarded when confronted with a situation that can lead to the greater good. Mifune plays a hardass doctor with a big heart who will break everyone's bones if they get in the way of him and a patient. I mean this literally.
The camera is very placid and Kurosawa's framing is very 'humanistic' as it allows you to really observe and care about the characters in each episode of the movie. It is quite long but offers an intermission. What happened to that in modern movies? What if we need to go to the bathroom? Or a 'real' excuse to walk away from the movie for a little while and 'reflect' on what we've seen? Thank you intermission. I will never forget you or "Red Beard".
