Review of Red Beard (1965) by Christopher P — 09 Jun 2008
This three hour, deeply humanistic epic is one of Kurosawa's finest achievements. The film is about a young medical intern who is transferred, grudgingly, to a public clinic. The lack of prestige and money is at first insulting, and the young doctor tries everything in his power to be fired.
Over the course of several months, however, he begins to learn from an older doctor what it means to be a healer. It is a testament to the goodness of humankind in a harsh world.
