Review of Red Beard (1965) by Matt S — 12 Jul 2007
When I was certain that Seven Samurai was destined to be my favorite Kurosawa film no matter what, I watched this film. I find this Mifune to be much more impressive than the wild-haired samurai of Kurosawa or The Samurai Trilogy.
He is more mature and more refined here. Within the first 45 minutes, I was certain that I had found a new favorite film. It did not slow, it had nary an imperfection in its flow and storytelling. As usual, Kurosawa's unique ability as a director to create a flowing visual space is absolutely definitive.
Every student of medicine, film, or life should see this film.
