Review of Red Army (2015) by Steve W — 31 Jan 2015
This movie will have you rooting for the Russians, if you can believe it. Masterfully told by Gabe Polsky, it documents the Soviet Union era of hockey, and the political and patriotic fervor of using the sport as a way of propaganda/warfare.
One thing that the documentary does it keep the viewer in the loop. It does have many interviews with ex-hockey players, journalists, and coaches, but also remembers to always re-introduce the names and occupations in case you forgot when swapping back and forth. The movie also has subtitles the whole way through, so viewers do not get confused by thick accents.
Just because this film is a documentary, it does not mean its not engaging. the musical score is masterful, using Russian style thumping and cool visual graphics. This is inter-cut with old television segments, old footage, for a tale that not only showcases sports in that era, but a subject that encompasses corruption, friendship, and the love of the sport. Red Army is a must see film.
