Review of Red Army (2015) by Christopher Llewellyn R — 01 Mar 2015
Whether you like hockey or not, Red Army is a great documentary and it's something any that loves history should watch. The documentary is funny, incredibly interesting and extremely well paced.
While the central topic is hockey and in particular the obsession of the game during communism in the USSR, the movie is really more about individuals growing up in a system that failed them.
Red Army is not a propaganda movie against communism. It's critical but not in a castigating way, but rather in a manner that illustrates how a decent idea failed under false premises, corruption and favoritism.
It's also a story about how lives were wasted, talents misused and dreams shattered in order to protect what was essentially painted rust.
I truly loved Red Army and as always, feel a little bit sad that no one will watch it. It's a shame great movies like this one get such little attention while garbage like Harry Potter make millions.
Excellent movie whether you like or hate hockey.
