Review of Red Army (2015) by Duncan P — 07 Jun 2015
Interesting documentary on a reasonably under-discussed aspect of propaganda and war-approximation via sports. Much as this may be a "sports documentary", it actually is more about politics and social engineering on both sides of the Iron Curtain than it is about smacking a puck around on the ice.
On the sports side of the discussion, as someone who is only basically passingly familiar with the nature of ice hockey and how it works, one of the more interesting aspects was the discussion of how there are different styles of play being shown - certainly not something I'd even considered previously to be a thing at all; but this is probably just due to an oversimplified understanding on my part.
Some parts proved a bit hard to understand, partly due to heavy Russian accents and partly due to the pace of the film glossing over some things a bit fast to catch the intricacies of, so I think another viewing may be necessary at some point, but otherwise, if you're not all that interested in sports, but are interested in politics, this comes recommended, regardless of the sporting aspects.
