Review of RED (2010) by Jonny B — 03 May 2012
Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Mary-Louise Parker; a stellar star cast doesn't always provide the goods. However, instead of feeling FED up, final thoughts will be:
R e a l l y.
E x I t I n g.
D r a m a.
What Red actually stands for (Retired Extremely Dangerous), explains clearly what the film revolves around.
Frank Moses (Willis) is a retired, lonely pensioner who lives a boring life to say the least. His only bright spark appears when having phone conversations to case worker Sarah (Parker; he immediately falls for her even though he has never seen her figure. But after an attack in the night by a group of hit-men, Moses realises Sarah may also be in danger; he kidnaps her against her own will (very humerous), and then reignites the old team of agents he was once a part of. Freeman joins the star studded cast first, swiftly followed by Malkovich and Mirren appears in the latter stages.
Red is a really fun thrill ride. The first half of the film is especially good because of the excellent cinematography used in the action sequences co-in-siding with a large amount of laughs for all ages; the plot is also one which will have you guessing.
The thing that lets Red down though - the second half. There is less urgency in the movie's tempo, chemistry between Willis and Parker deteriorates and the plot expands out of control; it gives the climax an untidy finish. Most of the films runs smooth, matters just get a little rugged towards the climax.
