Review of RED 2 (2013) by Roy O — 14 Dec 2013
The first Red came out in 2010 so I didn't get a chance to review it, but from what I remember it was a fun and engaging action romp with a great cast. Red 2 supplies the great cast once again with additions like Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and others, but it falls short in the 'fun' department.
While most of the actors do look like they're having a good time shooting this film, almost everything about it is poorly scripted with glaringly bad editing in the film room. I mean, there was an instance where Helen Mirren kicks a guard and you can see she didn't even touch him.
John Malkovich really cracked me up. Mary-Louise Parker was pretty hollow-eyed. The story doesn't necessarily pick up from the first, just the character relationships. After such an extended break between the two films, I would have liked a little narrative at the beginning to give me a history lesson on what had happened.
At just under two hours, it's probably just the right length to keep you from getting ancy.
