Review of RED 2 (2013) by Robert I — 30 Dec 2013
The action in this film always felt gratuitous. I know writing action movies is hard, but nearly every action scene felt unmotivated and just happened for the sake of having action. I liked the premise that the whole film happens because of a WikiLeaks posting. Mary-Louise Parker is still extremely adorkable. But then there's the villains... There's a "Robocop 3"-esque Asian assassin that pops up every now and then to cause mischief for Bruce Willis, but he always feels too outside the main plot. Neal McDonough is a formidable villain, but gets disposed of without much thought long before the film's conclusion. The dispatching of the main antagonist is also very predictable and anticlimactic. The script has good ideas, but feels like a first pass draft. There's so many story issues it's almost unenjoyable. The actors act their part though, unchallenged by the material they may be.
After this film, I think it is very clear: Mary-Louise Parker needs to star in her own action movie.
