Review of Recess: School's Out (2001) by Anthony N — 02 Sep 2012
Very. very average. I love the TV show, but this movie just feels....... I dunno........ not complete. I actually found the trailer more exciting than the movie. The movie has a lot of problems; 1. The other kids are hardly in it. The focus is more on TJ and I like TJ, but it would be nice if we get a bit more screen time on the other kids. Where as the "South Park" movie had sub plots on the 4 kids, "The Simpsons Movie" had a sub plot of the 4 members of the family, well, there's 5 but Maggie doesn't have a storyline.
2. The whole plot is about the government trying to get rid of Recess by using a tractor beam to move the moon to change the weather............. okay. How can you get Recess cancelled just by changing the weather? Also, the whole tractor beam thing is not something you would see in "Recess". It doesn't feel right.
3. You don't feel like you're watching a movie. You just feel like you're watching a long episode of the show. The South Park movie and The Simpsons Movie made you feel like you're watching a movie. They were in widescreen and had orchestral scores. I think another reason why Recess: School's Out feels this way is because they had a low budget of only 10 million. If they had 20 or 30 million, they probably could've done better. Imagine this movie with an orchestral score and it would feel like a movie.
There are some good gags in this here and now and this movie is defiantly a love letter to Summer Holidays, but really it could've, could've, been much better.
Worth a watch if you're a Recess fan. I love the Green Tambourine song in the credits too.
