Review of [REC] (2007) by Al M — 02 Aug 2011
Not sure why I didn't review this earlier when I watched it a few months back, but I will return to it now that I just saw the sequel. A found footage style film in the tradition of Cannibal Holocaust, The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield, etc.
, Rec is (to my knowledge) the first attempt to create a zombie film using this aesthetic approach, and the results are simply phenomenal. The film follows a reporter and her cameraman as they tag along with a group of firefighters during their evening rounds.
They wind up in an apartment building that is soon quarantined because a virus has begun turning its inhabitants into blood-thirsty maniacs. The film's story unfolds from an immersive, first person perspective that will leave you breathless by the end.
Harrowing, brutal, and unforgettable, Rec represents a new twist on the zombie genre that will leave you with nightmares afterwards.
