Review of [REC] (2007) by Jon C — 19 May 2014
The original Spanish-horror found footage movie that inspired the 2008 remake 'Quarantine'.
This one is shorter in its running time but just as scary and pulse-pounding.
Both versions involve a news TV crew documenting the average lifestyle of the fire department then a call-in comes in and both the news crew and firefighters end up getting caught in a biological nightmare.
People are acting ravenous, biting one another and an infectious disease begins to take hold off each of the building tenants.
The shaky-cam technique might be very off-putting for a lot of viewers but it makes the whole thing that much more real and terrifying.
Manuel Velasco is pretty good as the reporter although I did like Jennifer Carpenter better in the updated version.
Still the filmmakers keep you in the dark giving you jolts and more jolts as the terror escalates.
Again though the ending has a lot of be desired and leaves it all empty leaving some unanswered questions lingering.
Still, this is one of the early horror flicks that brilliantly utilizes the found-footage gimmick to great effect.
