Review of [REC]² (2009) by Simon D — 18 Sep 2015
I've bought some "Horror Movie Collection" yesterday in the shop and this is the first movie I've seen from it. I heard a lot of good things about it, so I was fairly excited about seeing it.
And the fact that it was a European and not an American film gave me even more hope. So, the movie's story is about a reporter and her cameraman who are recording an episode of a show that shows what goes on in their town while they're sleeping.
For this episode they decided to film a fire station and show the people how the firemen do their jobs. Suddenly, the alarm in the station goes off. Seems normal, right? Well, no. Not when the reason the alarm went off is because of some old crazy woman who woke everyone in her building with her screaming and yelling.
Eventually the firemen, along with the filming crew, get to the building and what follows is an hour of tension and scares. The acting was great. Everyone seemed genuinely scared and the reactions seemed very real.
The story was intriguing, though the ending is very confusing and nothing ever gets explained (perhaps in the sequels, but I've yet to see them). The characters are not very likeable. Everyone seems awkward, like they're hiding something, and you never really care who dies and who gets to live.
There are a few jumpscares in it, but the movie relies a bit more on the atmosphere to deliver the scares. All in all, a great horror movie with great acting and an interesting story that succeeds in delivering the scares, but fails in delivering a satisfying end.
