The generation gap between we youngsters and the adults are huge not only in the 50s of the states, but also nowadays in the fast-developing China. As the movie tells, the only way to decrease the gap is that the two generations sit down and talk.
Unfortunately, the problem goes worse as computers and internet becoming highly accessible to the youngsters.
