Review of Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Shane S — 21 Jul 2010
So...um...yeah. I watched this film.
Yeah, I found out Robert Blake sounds just like a whiny James Dean.
Natalie Wood can perform OK.
Sal Mineo is crazy.
And teenagers are bad. Very, very bad. I mean, we have to lock 'em up forever bad.
Or maybe that's just the groundbreaking motifs that are so cliched now. You know, knife fights, crazy teenagers, "you are tearing me apart", and suicide sequences that Tommy Wiseau adores? This film is full of 'em.
But look on the bright side: James Dean is a good actor, the writing's pretty well, and the camera work is awesome. Nicholas Ray did do a good job adapting this Cecil B. DeMille-esque melodrama about how teenagers "feel", even though this film isn't supposed to be set in the world where clowns can be apprentices to murderers running away from the law and trains can crash so you can show the togetherness of everybody. Yeah...
Do I suggest this? Well, if you want to complete your life, I guess so. It doesn't matter. You've seen the film so many times - you just don't know you've seen it.
