Review of Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Steph O — 02 Aug 2010
Not as good as "East of Eden", but still SO iconic. Sales of white tshirts, jeans and red jackets apparently went through the roof after this movie. Sal Mineo's performance is the best. It's very sad that all three leads died young though.
For those who for some reason have never heard of this movie, "Rebel Without a Cause" is about a young rebel who moves to a new town, a new school - and immediately finds trouble with some of the local guys.
But he also finds a friend in Sal Mineo's character, and something more than a friend in Natalie Wood's character. It's pretty obvious that Mineo's character has some issues though... and these become more clear as the movie goes on.
The way I saw this movie, Sal Mineo and James Dean totally loved each other. Their characters, that is. Although there have been rumours about real life too. Who knows, it's just an amazing movie.
Tragic and powerful and still relevant.
