Review of Rear Window (1954) by Suneel J — 04 Dec 2011
The use of exceptional film techniques and masterful suspense accentuate one of Alfred Hitchcock's greatest concoctions. The stunning scenery of the neighbourhood is extremely realistic for the 1950's and the lines of sight seem to be done exquisitely.
The suspense and mystery aspect is done beautifully because we see it through the eyes of James Stewart's character rather than objectively. Even the audience doesn't know what is really happening with the neighbours.
Grace Kelly is fantastic and incredibly gorgeous as the strong, female lead. The film also addresses social problems with privacy laws and legal procedures. Altogether, the film mixes Hitchcock's best ideas with great acting, plot, setting, and envelopment to create this thrilling classic.
