Review of Rear Window (1954) by Matthew K — 24 Apr 2013
As somebody who likes the idea of films trying plots that are very different and uncommon to the regular film format, I have very VERY rarely seen it done even nearly as well as this. The entire film is set in a single (relatively small) room, has about 4 or 5 characters who get significant dialogue, yet STILL triumphs as a masterpiece on what cinema, whether this unconventional or not, should be.
What keeps it running isn't only the mystery (which in itself is thrilling), but the pacing is great, the fact that the script is so good it can develop minor characters with little to no dialogue, and just generally great ideas, like making the soundtrack played in entirety by the artistic neighbour.
All in all, I could not recommend any more; Hitchcock proves again at being the true master that he is. 5/5.
