Review of Rear Window (1954) by Nathan A — 25 May 2014
Here is a movie that made me realise that Hitchcock truly is one of a kind. I really don't know any other director could have directed this, this whole movie takes place in apartment room, yes, the whole takes place in one room. And no this isn't the first time Hitch has done this either, he also did it in Rope. Funny because both starred Jimmy Stewart. This movie might be 56 years old but it's still as suspenseful now as it was back then. Many movies have borrowed from Rear Window but none of them are as brilliant.
Anyone that knows me well enough, knows my favorite director is the master of suspense. Actually no one really comes close to Hitchcock, he made 10 masterpieces, and 10 really good movies, and about 8 or 9 pretty decent pictures. Incase you've lost count, that's around 30 movies that are good in my book. No other filmmaker has that kind of track record. Everyone in Hollywood has borrowed from Hitchcock atleast once, he had that much of an influence on Hollywood.
Anyways for anyone who hasn't seen a Hitchcock film or hasn't seen one they liked and hasn't seen this, well stop reading and rent or buy this now. This one best told murder mystery ever put on film. Every scene here is outstanding, everyone here shines, James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter, and Raymond Burr, all give great performances. Curtis Hanson once said if someone wants to know what Alfred Hitchcock is all about, just show then Rear Window. It has all the answers on what the man was all about. I recommend this movie to anyone new to Hitchcock, or anyone who loves suspense cinema.
