Review of Rear Window (1954) by George A — 02 Jan 2015
Better than Vertigo. People consider Vertigo to be Hitchcock's masterpiece, some say it's better than Citizen Kane. I say that while Rear Window is better than Vertigo and Citizen Kane, it's still not the best ever.
The performances are great, Thelma Ritter is a standout as always. The cinematography is some of the best I've ever seen. It took me awhile to realize they were filming on a soundstage. Hitch hated filming on location.
All of the characters in the windows are great. Lars, Miss Torso, and Miss Lonelyhearts. The movie keeps you guessing and doubting theories up until the end. Like the master he is, Hitch strings you along and makes you think that the obvious is completely wrong, and makes you feel like an idiot when it's over, but also making you know you've watched a very good movie.
