Review of Rear Window (1954) by Joe C — 04 Jan 2015
One way to wage war among cinephiles is to ask which of Hitchcock's films is his greatest. It is in the humble opinion of your list creator that his bare-bones thriller is not only his best, but one of the best thrillers ever.
A simple technical exercise, making the whole film in one room, is given a ballsy bravura by Hitchcock as a terrific James Stewart thinks he's witnessed his neighbor has committed murder. Obsession is a major theme (natch) and while you begin to question Stewart's sanity, the suspense is cranked up to unbearable levels, all while your views to the outside world are confined to views from a, um, rear window.
It may be a overworked theme now, but go ahead, watch any one of Rear Window's infinite inferior imitators and watch out embellishing an already perfect formula destroys it.
