Review of Rear Window (1954) by Matthew M — 26 Mar 2016
It's an impeccable and perfect exercise in scripting, directing and suspense, and only Hitchcock could ever get this close to the most complete and greatest film ever released. The conversations are so real, the characters so genuine and the action so ambiguous and ominous that the whole movie seems like it could have happened to you, inside your own home, when you look at your neighbours.
Hitchcock's distinctive visual style lends superbly to his scathing view of voyeurism and the "peeping tom" ideas in society at that time, and this still hasn't lost its impact 60 years on - in fact, right now, it's probably more relatable than it ever has been.
A masterpiece.
